Guatemala

Girls and women living near Guatemala City’s landfill area are particularly vulnerable and face marginalisation and the threat of violence in their daily lives. The areas surrounding the landfill are among the poorest in Guatemala City, violence is widespread, and pollution from the dump is causing health problems for locals. In 2021, Inter-Cultur started a new project to tackle misery in this area in partnership with Junkabal.

The project offers vocational training and education in cosmetology, hospitality and gastronomy. The profile of beneficiaries is women aged between 15 to 65 years old, living in the neighbouring garbage dump area where Junkabal’s facilities are located. In addition, we provide life-skills workshops that empower women’s economic and personal development. With the vocational education they receive, women can strengthen their position in the community as they become economic agents.

Inter-Cultur’s projects in Guatemala are designed to support and align with the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
